Ground Beetles

Peatlands are important habitats for ground beetles, with fens and upland bogs tending to have greater diversity of species than raised bogs.

Peatlands are particularly important for ground beetles from the Genus Carabus, containing important European populations of Carabus clatratus and Carabus nitens. The need to conserve a suitable habitat for these beetles in Northern Ireland is essential, as species such as Carabus nitens have disappeared from much of lowland Northern Europe. Attempts to reintroduce this species to peatland areas within its former range in The Netherlands and Germany have had mixed results.
