Butterflies

Butterflies are conspicuous insects, but many of the species seen on peatlands in fact only live around the margins. Only a small number of butterflies can be regarded as true peatland species. The mosaic of scrub, woodland and grassland around the periphery of many fens and bogs contains all the plants that many species require for food. Information on the most characteristic peatland butterflies is given in the table below:
