Amphibians and Reptiles

Peatlands are perfect habitats for amphibians, as they spend the first part of their life in water. Northern Ireland's two species of amphibians occur in peatlands:

  • The common frog is a characteristic peatland animal, found in both lowland and upland bogs.
  • Breeding newts are usually associated with alkaline pools but also live in acidic bog pools.

The common lizard breeds on land and is not adapted to living in very wet habitats but often lives in the drier parts of a bog. They are more likely to be seen on upland blanket bogs.

The table below gives information on amphibian and reptile species found in Northern Ireland peatlands.
