Plants
Trees
Trees, especially alder and willow occur naturally on fens.
In current climatic conditions trees are not generally a
natural feature of bogs in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
However some species of trees, particularly birch, are common
on cutover or drained bogs in Ireland as they are able to
colonise drier peat. Several species of conifer have been
planted on bogs throughout Europe but all require drainage
and nutrient input for reasonable growth. Alder buckthorn,
which was once found around the edges of many raised bogs,
is now a very scare tree in Northern Ireland. Further information
about tree species associated with peatlands is given below
