Alder Buckthorn is a rare and native species in Ireland. It is a shrub or small tree found on fens, lagg streams or beside drains in cutover bogs. It is not related to alder or buckthorn. In Northern Ireland its remaining sites are mostly around the Lough Neagh area. The wood was used to prepare explosive fuses and charcoal due to its slow burning nature. In Northern Ireland Alder Buckthorn is protected under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife Order and has been identified as a Species of Conservation Concern because of its scarcity and decline in distribution.
