Sharp-flowered Rush (Juncus acutiflorus)
Sharp-flowered rush is an upright rush growing to 1m and thrives
in wet habitats such as fens and blanket bogs. The stems are
typically topped by two or more whorls of greenish-brown flowers.
Rushes were traditionally used in the construction of thatched
roofs, for bedding and locally, in lard saturated bunches as
rush lights. It is a common plant in Northern Ireland.
