The Northern Marsh Orchid is an upright plant up to 25cm tall and a dweller of fens and other wet places. Its flowers are a rich deep purple and appear in June and July. The pretty flowers often betray its surroundings as its range can extend to ditches and roadside verges. The Northern Marsh Orchid hybridises with other orchid species including the Common Spotted-Orchid (D. fuchsii). In Northern Ireland its distribution is localised.
