Marsh Pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris)
Marsh pennywort is a creeping, mat-forming plant of wet areas
such as fens and bogs. It develops upright stems each topped
by a single leaf which resemble an old penny. It produces few,
tiny, whiteish-pink flowers with redish buds and yellow anthers
in tight heads or sworls at the base of the leaves. These tiny
flowers are generally self-pollinated. Marsh Pennywort is common
on wet sites throughout Northern Ireland.
