Purple-loosestrife and Yellow Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria, Lysimachia vulgaris)

Purple loosestrife and Yellow Loosestrife both grows on fens preferring those parts, which are permanently wet. While Purple loosestrife is a true loosestrife, belonging to the Puple-loosestrife family, Yellow Loosestrife is a member of the primrose family. Their shared common name refers to their mythical ability to settle arguments. They produce their respective coloured flowers between June and August and put on a handsome display when present in any quantity. Purple loosestrife is widespread throughout lowland regions in Northern Ireland, while Yellow Loosestrife is has a more restricted distribution.
