Bottle Sedge (Carex rostrata)

Bottle Sedge is a plant that colonises the open water of fens and bog pools. Their seeds (utricles) are filled with air to help them float and thus they are easily dispersed by the surrounding water. Their leaves are glaucous on the upper surface, dark green and shiny beneath growing upright to a height of around 1m. The flowering stems terminate in multiple (4+) male and female flower spikes. This species is widespread throughout Northern ireland.
