Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata)
This aquatic plant grows in shallow bog pools with its broad
trefoil leaves and flower spikes projecting out of the water.
It is present in fens, blanket bogs and raised bogs throughout
Ireland and is common in places. The flowers, appearing between
May and July are pink outside but white inside. The petals have
a conspicuous flush of hairs on their inner surface. It was
once used as a medicinal plant and included in a cure-all tonic.
Although it is intolerant of shade, it endures a wide range
of water conditions and is widely distributed.
