Black Bog Rush (Schoenus nigricans)
This tufted, medium sized sedge grows in dense tussocks and
is particularly suited to fens and blanket bogs, especially
those that have a relatively rich nutrient base. It is characterised
by its crown of 5-10 black-brown spikelets which bear the flowers
between May and July. In the west of Ireland it is frequent
on lower altitude ("Atlantic") blanket bogs but in Northern
Ireland it can be found at up to 550m e.g. Mourne Mountains,
Antrim Plateau.
