Peatlands cover a significant portion of the land in Northern Ireland but at the beginning of the 19th century peatlands were much more extensive throughout Ireland. It is hardly surprising therefore that we find many works of art from the early 20th century, which were inspired by the peatland landscape. One of Northern Ireland’s most famous artists, T.P Flanagan from Fermanagh, painted many fen scenes in and around the shores of Lough Erne.

Similar rural scenes were painted by John Luke including The Road to the West but in a very different style.

Peatlands continue to inspire a new generation of artists who are using many different media to interpret peatlands.

The paintings of Paul Henry captured the people and the rural landscape of the west of Ireland. Peatlands, which were such an integral part of rural life, are a component in many of his paintings including Roadside Cottages, Evening on the Bog, and of course Turf Stacks.
