Brackagh NNR

This 110 hectare reserve is a complex tapestry of pools and hollows, the result of many centuries of peat cutting. Formerly a raised bog extensive peat cutting has brought the surface of the bog to below the water table creating pools of open water. Ramparts, up to two meters high, were left transecting the bog as a means of access. The peat cutting has resulted in a wide  range of habitats ranging from open water, to fen, with remnants of the raised bog still evident.

Species of note include 14 species of dragonfly  and 16 species of  butterfly. the site is also one of the few European locations for the Irish Ladies Tresses Orchid.
