Peatland

Rathlin-Ballycarry

This site was declared primarily for its heath communities, but it also supports numerous flooded peat-bottomed lakes and ponds. The open waters support stands of floating and emergent vegetation comprised of Broad-leaved Pondweed and Unbranched Bur-reed, and Bottle Sedge, Common Spike-rush and Common Reed.

Around the margins floating rafts of poor acid fen can be found, characterised by Aquatic Bog Mosses, which have, in a number of cases, completely covered the surface of the ponds. Runnels, supporting a more base rich flush vegetation characterised by Black Bog-rush, occasionally run into these hollows. Soakways, characterised by Marsh St Johns-Wort and Bog Pondweed flowing between them.

There is no public access to this site.
