Location: Dullaghan Co. Tyrone
Description
This very solidly made, wedge-shaped oak dugout from possibly
a former crannog lake is of interest on two counts. First, because
of its design, incorporating a virtual chair for the paddler
in the stern. Second, because of the manner in which it was
moored, in association with timbers and stakes of various kinds,
a prepared anchorage.
The craft measured approximately 3.96m in length, 81cm wide
at the bow and 96cm wide at the stern, and stood 76cm tall.
The stern had been left extremely stout, allowing the fashioning
of what can only be described as an integral seat with low back.
A paddle handle found with the hull indicates the likely means
of propulsion.
